HENRIK SIMONSEN
| 'Untamed' | New Print Edition
November 10th 2017
Henrik Simonsen
’s most recent screenprint edition,
Untamed
, sees the artist use the rich, heavy, warm light of late summer as influence for the colours he uses in this 15-colour screenprint. With cool blue tones against deep crimson and russet, the work also captures the play of sunlight and shadow that is so typical of the climate in the Western hemisphere at the height of its glory - just before it descends into Fall.

PRINT EDITION RELEASE
Working at Artizan studios in Gloucestershire, Simonsen recalled sketches he’d done late in August whilst lying in a clearing in the forest near to where he grew up in Denmark. The different plants and elements are given a lot of freedom and the pictorial space is full of meandering tendrils and branches that deepen the perspective in the image. The pale green leaves seem to grow outwards towards the viewer which gives us the impression of a fertile forest, abundant and full of life as it is during the most temperate seasons.
Simonsen's fascination for flora and fauna is attributed to his Scandinavian roots due to the region’s long standing tradition for art, design and architecture inspired by natural forms. He is also inspired by elements of the French 'Rococo' style, especially its lack of structure, and the way it embraced the bizarre and beautiful, opulently celebrating the organic and the sensuous.
In the studio, the way
Henrik Simonsen
works is as organic as it is when he’s sketching in the outdoors; he doesn’t start with a preconceived image that he then tries to replicate, but instead builds the picture as it develops, adding and removing parts as he goes along and the process with
Untamed
was no exception. Indeed the original sketches were lost so the final image became more about the sensory memory of the scene itself than the recreation of the drawings.

LUCIE BENNETT
| ‘Delphine’, ‘Marianne’ and ‘Romy’
Presenting three French girls into her cast of savvy and confident females, Lucie Bennett introduced the ‘Naked Burgundies’ on a London spring evening. The strong feminine sexuality - one that confronts the audience - is apparent in many of Bennett’s work; at other times her female subjects are portrayed in a private moment of contemplation, seemingly oblivious to the viewer’s gaze. Bennett’s controlled, sensual lines and her conscious use of a refined burgundy palette in the Burgundy nudes, embraces Delphine, Marianne and Romy in flattering warm, dark red hues.

HENRIK SIMONSEN
| ‘Blue Hour’
Danish artist Henrik Simonsen has time and time again captivated the audience with his ability to represent the beauty of nature’s forms, composition, light, and colour in his original prints and paintings. Inspired by his time spent in the Scandinavian countryside, Simonsen not only creates works from his observations of plants’ and flowers’ physical features, but also from personal impressions and experiences of nature. One print edition, Blue Hour, portrays a small patch of nature confined in subtle, dazzling and gripping blue tones, and lets everyone in on an inspiring tale of new beginnings.
